Eating Through the Storm

Starting in January of the 2021-2022 hockey season, I started taking notes on the different food I've eaten around PNC Arena, the Loudest House in the NHL.

Popcorn

January 30, 2022

Opponent: New Jersey Devils

Game result: CAR 2, NJD 1

Popcorn

Tasting notes:

Salty with a buttery taste, but not greasy beyond the coconut oil it’s popped in.

Value:

$7

Pricy, but you do get a big bag.

Overall thoughts:

Like any stadium popcorn. It’s really good. Exactly what you expect.

Pizza

January 30, 2022

Opponent: New Jersey Devils

Game result: CAR 2, NJD 1

Pizza

Tasting notes:

Like a solid cafeteria pizza. Not quite as good as Costco but not much worse either. Not light on the cheese, pretty standard mozzarella Crispy crust with a chain pizza amount of chew Light sauce, kind of a background player but works well as part of what they’ve built here, mostly just tastes like canned tomato

Value:

$10 regular ~$8.50 STM price Slightly less expensive with other “entrees” in the arena, maybe a little more filling even too.

Overall thoughts:

Exceeded my expectations. Pretty good, pretty filling, would get again.

BBQ Nachos

February 16, 2022

Opponent: Florida Panthers

Game result: FLA 3, CAR 2 (OT)

BBQ Nachos

Tasting Notes:

Salty and crunchy. Smoky and meaty. And all brought together with some Tostitos nacho cheese. I ate these with a fork. Very tasty and very texturally pleasing. Not quite as filling as the pizza, but a healthy satiating portion nonetheless.

Value:

$11 The BBQ nachos are comparable to other entrees at this price point in the arena and are in my opinion worth it.

Overall Thoughts:

In NC barbecue is a noun so barbecue nachos literally means nachos with barbecue.

This is the quintessential PNC Arena food. It combines the barbecue North Carolina is known for (although pulled rather than chopped) with stadium nachos in a delightful Union.

This is a must-try and worth the quick wait in the ever-present line.

Sinfully Sinammon Cinnamon Bun

February 27, 2022

Opponent: Edmonton Oilers

Game result: CAR 2, EDM 1

Sinfully Sinammon Cinnamon Bun

Tasting Notes:

Not too sweet but the right amount of sweet. Good cinnamon flavor. I think the icing is a cream cheese icing like Cinnabon uses, but overall a less sweet product, in a good way.

Very tasty and the right amount of savory with the sweet. It’s also not dry at all and so served warm.

The center of the cinnamon bun was delightfully gooey and tasted amazing.

Value:

$7

It’s pretty big, this is a great value for an arena dessert or snack for one person

Overall Thoughts:

This one came highly recommended to me and I see why. It’s a really great snack. They are freshly baked at their stand and it is great to have a warm cinnamon bun at a cool hockey game. This bun delivers on what you want.

Cheddar Pretzel

March 20, 2022

Opponent: New York Rangers

Game result: NYR 2, CAR 0

Cheddar Pretzel

Tasting notes:

Bready, not very dark or malty tasting. Cheddar cheese mild is reminiscent of a cheddar cheese sauce from a fast food place, but not quite as good. They use mild cheddar for sure, not sharp. Salt level is light on the cheddar pretzel.

Value:

$7

The pretzel is great if you’re in the mood for a pretzel. The lines are usually fast and it’s comparable in size to other snacks at this price point.

Overall Thoughts:

There are two pretzels I order and I like one of them better than the other. The one I like more is definitely the cheddar pretzel. The other is the cream cheese pretzel. This one is pretty solid and a worthy arena snack. It’s far from the best thing I’ve had but I go back for them for the convenience and the fact that they’re good enough.

Other varieties available tonight included cream cheese, cinnamon sugar, and regular salt. The brand on the warmer at the kiosk I go to is labeled “Pretzel Fillers”

Nutty Bavarian Almonds

April 21, 2022

Opponent: Winnipeg Jets

Game result: CAR 4, WPG 2

Nutty Bavarian Almonds

Tasting Notes:

Chewier than I expected. Not too sweet with a fair amount of cinnamon but definitely more sugar coming through. Tastes kind of syrupy rather than like pure white sugar.

Value:

$7 for one or $12 for two

I think the value is alright. Almond prices have been lower at the grocery store lately so this sticks out as quite a bit more expensive for what is effectively a large handful of almonds. The paper cone was not nearly as full as the ones on the Nutty Bavarian website (nuttyb.com) are.

No season ticket discount because the Nutty Bavarian is “an outside vendor”.

Overall Thoughts:

Mine were cold by the time I got to my seat in the rafters. I imagine they would be a little better if they were warmer. Overall a nice snack but really nothing to write home about. I would rather have a handful of the wasabi soy sauce almonds I have at home. Maybe this is because of how chewy they are but my jaw was really sore by the end of them.

Chicken Quesadilla w/ Chips and Queso

May 20, 2022

Opponent: New York Rangers

Game result: CAR 2, NYR 0

Chicken Quesadilla w/ Chips and Queso

Tasting Notes:

The Quesadilla is really cheesy, in a good way. It tastes like it is mostly a cheddar Jack blend. There are some peppers that have a texture as though they were previously frozen, and the chicken has a taste like previously frozen chicken breast strips do. The tortilla has a good amount of browning and tastes good.

The chips are standard stadium Tostitos rounds as in the bbq nachos. The queso is really good. Like Moe’s but a little thinner and a little spicier. It’s actually really good queso considering you can only find it tucked away at one quiet stand.

Value:

$14.50 $12.32 STM

This is definitely one of the more expensive items I’ve seen. But it comes with a quesadilla and a side of chips and queso.

The quesadilla is not super thick but it’s contents are fairly evenly distributed. I had one wedge that was much thinner than the others, however.

There are plenty of chips and a good amount of queso. There was enough queso to get a good dip on every chip.

Together I feel like it’s a bit more expensive than it should be when you compare to other options. The quesadilla was not as good as other entrees in its price range, but the chips and queso were great.

Overall Thoughts:

Only one vendor sells the chicken quesadilla in PNC Arena, and it’s tucked somewhere in the curve of the north end of the arena.

I’ve wandered by and wanted to try this for a while.

The quesadilla is cut into three slices and sits atop the chips, and a cup of queso is handed to you on the side.

Overall, my thoughts in the value and tasting sections are how I feel: the quesadilla is not carrying its weight for the price this is, as It’s constituent parts all taste frozen and not amazing. The chips and queso is great and if it’s an option on its own I would recommend trying it. I did see they also sell nachos but I will have to try those another time.

I had hoped this quesadilla would be like one from a Moe’s or a Sandella’s or a Chili’s appetizer menu, but it was more like one of those ones you can buy completely frozen and heat up in the microwave, only this one was grilled.
